Allow coaching to take you to the next level!

Coaching

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires a person to maximize their personal and professional potential. They continue:

"The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership...When you partner with a coach, you are in the driver’s seat. Your coach provides support for accountability and self-awareness and helps you gain new perspectives. Coaches ask questions not to get an answer they desire, but to encourage you in meaningful exploration that can help you reach a new level of depth and performance."

I believe the accountability and the new awareness is where individuals reap the greatest benefits. When I first started in family faith formation, we got "stuck" a few times. A coach would have been helpful in allowing my team to work together to see new perspectives, find the clarity we needed around our goals, and work through some challenges with an accountability partner.

According to the International Coaching Federation:
  • 80% of people who receive coaching report increased self-confidence
  • 70% of people report improved work performance, relationships, and more effective communication skills
  • 86% of companies report that they recouped their investment on coaching

Faith formation is not about work performance, but I do not know a parish leader who wouldn't agree that sometimes focusing on our communication skills, getting clear on our goals, and holding each other accountable in our planning and implementing of programs is incredibly important to doing the work of evangelization and catechesis.

Individual

Individual sessions are one-on-one coaching sessions in which the individual wants to work on a specific goal, whether finding clarity around their leadership role, or a specific task, or the direction of a faith formation program. The individual leads the direction of these sessions by choosing the topic. The coach provides accountability, and asks powerful questions so the individual might gain new perspective.

Parish/Ministry Team Coaching

I love working with teams. There are so many dynamics at play and I believe the collaboration provides opportunity for incredible growth. Team work provides leaders with the opportunity to have another form of accountability for his or her team. In this type of coaching we work toward specific goals with stated timelines. I have seen teams make incredible progress toward stated goals with the help of team coaching.

Diocesan or Learning Cohort Coaching

Diocesan offices can provide incredible support to their leaders by offering a coaching cohort. In this manner leaders from a group of parish come together in the coaching session to work through specific issues, brainstorm, and mine solutions to their faith formation challenges. The variety of leaders, personalities, programs, and ideas can create an incredible soil for growth. The cohort provides the themes and the accountability, and they gain new perspectives together. A diocese can use this approach to pilot an effort toward an integrated faith formation approach.
